  • About Leigh Gallagher

    Leigh Gallagher is an Assistant Managing Editor at Fortune, where she writes and edits feature stories, oversees Fortune editorial franchises including the “40 Under 40” rankings, and hosts  Fortune Live, a 30-minute weekly showon She is also a co-chair of the Fortune Most Powerful Women and Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summits, speaks regularly at Fortune and other business and economics conferences, and is a seasoned business news commentator, appearing regularly on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, CBS News’ Face the Nation and CBS This Morning, CNBC’s Squawk Box, public radio’s Marketplace and a wide variety of other programs. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and from 2012-2014 she was a visiting scholar for the Business and Economic Reporting program at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at New York University.

    Gallagher’s provocative book, The End of the Suburbs: Where the American Dream is Moving, published by Portfolio in August 2013, has started a nationwide conversation on the future of how and where we live. Since publication, Gallagher has discussed the book on television outlets including the TODAY Show, Meet the Press, Morning Joe, the CBS Evening News, Fareed Zakaria GPS, and in publications including Fortune, Time, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington PostPeople, Real Simple, The Atlantic, the Huffington Post and more. The End of the Suburbs has been described as a “first-rate social history,” a “steel fist in a velvet glove,” “prophetic,” and “fascinating reading on changing trends in how and where we live.”

    Gallagher is an engaging speaker and has addressed audiences of all kinds. She has given talks to corporate audiences including Google, Trulia and Viacom; she has been the keynote speaker for a number of housing, real estate, downtown association and economic development conferences; and she has been featured at thought leader events including TEDx MidAtlantic, Philadelphia magazine’s ThinkFest, Atlanta’s (co)lab Summit and South by Southwest. Gallagher is also a skilled moderator; she has also conducted on-stage interviews with leaders including Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Tory Burch, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns, DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman, fragrance entrepreneur Jo Malone, former Texas Governor Rick Perry and many more. Before joining Fortune in 2007, Gallagher was a senior editor at SmartMoney magazine and a writer for Forbes. Originally from Media, Pennsylvania, Gallagher is a graduate of Cornell University and lives in New York.
